A coolcation is a summer holiday planned around temperature rather than in spite of it. Instead of booking the Mediterranean in August and negotiating with 38°C, you travel north, or up — to lakes, fjords, forests and mountain valleys where July sits in the high teens and sleeping without air conditioning is normal again. The search term is new. The instinct is not.
We looked at our own collection through this single filter: what is the average July temperature at each property, and which stays hold a verified guest rating above 9.5 while staying below 22°C? What follows are only hotels already in the Places You Will Love collection — no fillers, no places we have not read the reviews for.
What counts as a coolcation
There is no official definition, so we use a simple one: an average daytime July temperature under 22°C, in a place where the landscape — not the pool — is the reason you came. That threshold matters. Below roughly 22°C you can walk at midday, eat outside at eight, and sleep with the window open. Above 30°C the day reorganises itself around shade.
Three practical reasons travellers are moving north:
- Comfort. Southern European heatwaves now routinely fall in the exact weeks families are free to travel.
- Space. Alpine and Nordic destinations peak more gently than the coast; the same week feels emptier.
- Sleep. Guests mention it constantly in reviews of our northern properties — cool nights are the thing they remember.
Lakes and mountains: the classic coolcation
Average July temperature: 14.9°C. Guest rating 9.8 across 368 verified reviews. A lake hotel in the Austrian Salzkammergut where the water stays cold enough to be a genuine shock and the surrounding peaks keep the valley shaded into mid-morning. This is the most literal coolcation in the collection — and the one guests describe in the calmest language.
Average July temperature: 16.1°C. A chalet in the Vosges forest, rated 9.6. Alsace in summer is one of the most underrated cool-weather regions in western Europe: wooded ridgelines, walking straight from the door, and wine villages an hour below.
Average July temperature: 19.9°C. Proof that a coolcation does not require leaving southern Europe — only leaving the coast. Green Navarra, in the Basque hinterland, runs roughly ten degrees cooler in July than the Spanish south, with a 9.6 rating and mountain views from a small, quiet house.
The Nordic version: light, not heat

Average July temperature: 17.4°C. Rated 9.6 across 422 verified reviews. Stockholm in July is the coolcation argument in miniature: eighteen degrees, light until close to midnight, and a city that empties politely into the archipelago. Ett Hem is a townhouse rather than a hotel, and guests write about it the way they write about a friend's home.
Cool cities, if you would rather not hike
Northern European cities are the easiest coolcation to book, because nothing about the trip has to change except the map.

Average July temperature: 14.1°C. The coolest property in our collection, and the least obvious: Andean coffee country at altitude, rated 9.8. Colombia's mountains run cool year-round, which makes them a genuine northern-summer alternative rather than a seasonal one.

How to plan a coolcation
- Pick the temperature first, the country second. Anything averaging 15–21°C in your travel month behaves like a coolcation, whether that is Austria or the Andes.
- Book shoulder-adjacent weeks. Northern destinations peak hard in the last two weeks of July; late June and the first week of September are quieter and barely warmer.
- Pack for two seasons. Alpine and Nordic days swing 12–15°C between morning and afternoon.
- Check the water. Lake swimming at 15°C air temperature is wonderful for ten minutes and no longer.
