In the jungle hills above Kandy, The Flame Tree Estate & Hotel is a restored walawwa — a Sri Lankan manor house — set within 25 private acres and surrounded by deeper forest. It feels less like a hotel than the country home of a well-travelled friend: a white colonial house with a green roof, a lily-pond courtyard, a library lined floor to ceiling with books, and drawing rooms hung with modern art, antiques and Ena de Silva batiks. There are only nine rooms and suites, each named after a jungle creature and furnished with four-poster beds, antique writing desks and verandas that look into the trees. Below the house, a long infinity pool mirrors the palms and the sunset over the hills.
